Every year, the Silverbacks organizes an interactive comedy show at the ACA (Acadiana Center for the Arts) called the Improv Rumble, where improvisers from all over Southern Louisiana share the stage to compete in various short-form comedy games. After each game, the audience uses their smartphones to vote for their favorite performance, which is recorded in real-time and ultimately determines the winning team. With the winning team being awarded a banana trophy, it’s no wonder what’s got these silly improvisers rumbling in the first place!
The objective was clear: create a logo and brand that vividly and playfully captured the essence of the event. It was crucial to make the logo universally appealing, while effectively conveying both competition and collaboration.
To achieve these goals, I employed amiable, hand-rendered typography with lively lettering, integrating a vibrant spectrum of colors into the word "rumble." This approach successfully breathed life into the logo, granting the Improv Rumble a distinct and enjoyable visual identity.
When it came time to design the branding, I delved into the significance of "rumble" and posed a thought-provoking question to myself: "If 'rumble' were to evoke an earthquake rather than a brawl, what would trigger the earthquake?" The answer was clear: laughter. Perhaps the audience's uproarious laughter would induce an earthquake? Armed with this notion, I crafted a background texture of earthquake-like lines to be featured on billboards and social media posts, further capturing the Improv Rumble’s inherent energy. With the addition of photos of improvisers from previous Improv Rumble events, the billboard and social media ads provide an exclusive glimpse into the Improv Rumble, showcasing the authentic joy and excitement experienced firsthand.
